TECHNOLOGY
Sensys Medical is developing a blood glucose-monitoring device that uses near infrared (NIR) diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS) to measure glucose levels non-invasively. Sensys Medical uses NIR-DRS as the process of understanding how NIR light (750-2500nm) interacts with various molecules (e.g. fat, glucose, protein, and water) in human tissue. Each type of molecule reacts differently (i.e. absorbs NIR light) when illuminated with NIR light. The amount of light absorbed is proportional to the concentration of that particular molecule. NIR-DRS has an inherent advantage due to its non-destructive and fast nature.

The success achieved to date has been due to the extensive efforts made to understand the interaction of light with the components of human tissue. This success has led to the development of stable, extremely sensitive instrumentation and proprietary analytical algorithms, which relate measured light to blood glucose levels in tissue.
