PLATFORM Sensys Medical’s evolutionary product platform is comprised of four stages. The first-stage device was a research-grade prototype, and was used in a large-scale, clinical trial with more than 130 adults with diabetes enrolled. The clinical trial demonstrated that Sensys Medical’s non-invasive blood glucose device effectively measured blood glucose in 90 percent of people with diabetes tested. This multi-center national trial was the largest of its kind to evaluate a non-invasive testing method. The second-stage device was an upright console measuring 26” tall x 26” deep x 7” wide intended to test and validate Sensys Medical’s proprietary algorithms. The device required users to place their forearm on the device, like an armrest, to obtain a non-invasive blood glucose reading. The device provided Sensys Medical with its first inputs related to human factor items such as comfort, size, usability and cost. The third-stage device, the Sensys GTS™, is currently under development and testing. It is a battery-operated device with a footprint approximately the size of a laptop computer and about 3” thick. Users will place this portable device onto a table with their forearm stationed in front. The user will then take the sensor head and connect it to an arm guide that was previously attached to their forearm to obtain a non-invasive blood glucose reading. As such, the device is designed to provide people with diabetes an easy and painless way to monitor blood glucose rather than relying upon todays traditional blood-stick methods. The next-generation Sensys GTS™, also under development, will be approximately 60% smaller and eliminate the need for an arm guide. It is designed to enable more portable self-testing and is expected to be available in 2008, pending regulatory clearances. |
